Who is this suitable for?

Current or future chairs of a single academy trust board

This programme would suit those new to chairing or anticipating becoming chair shortly.

This programme aims to equip you to build effective governance in your trust by:

How will you learn?

The programme offers a blend of flexible learning delivered at a sensible pace for busy chairs
It comprises three 2.5-hour small group workshops led by an experienced NGA consultant, with a focus on leading the board, delivering effective governance and leading school improvement
Discussion, debate and networking are an important part of the workshops. Because it is run virtually, this programme enables you to network with current and future SAT chairs from all over England

What are the outcomes

By the end of the programme, you will:

have a clear understanding of strategic leadership within the context of governance
know how to manage and build your team and your relationship with your senior executive leader
know how to plan for succession and other changes, and be able to lead and influence when required
be knowledgeable about governance structures, effective delegation, and how to work with your governance professional to best effect
understand the governance role in school improvement and be able to lead the board in effectively challenging the performance of the school
be able to assess your effectiveness, to problem-solve, and to create and sustain your networks

Your facilitator

Dai Thomas delivers training, development and bespoke support for academy trust boards, including external reviews of governance. He has extensive experience in improving the effectiveness of governance in trusts, mentoring and coaching chairs and leading the board restructures. He has led academy conversions including those at the primary school where he was chair. Dai has many years of experience of chairing in primary and secondary settings and is now a trustee of a multi academy trust on the South Coast.
