About this programme

  • Current or future chairs of the academy committee of a multi academy trust (often known as a local governing body or LGB)

This programme would suit those new to chairing or anticipating becoming chair shortly.

This programme aims to equip you to help you lead effective local governance in your school by:

  • focusing on meeting challenges typically faced by LGB chairs
  • developing your knowledge, leadership skills and networks with peers
  • enhancing your awareness of your strengths and areas for development
  • creating self-supporting groups to ensure learning continues beyond the programme
  • offering a system to problem-solve through action-learning sets

A comprehensive Participant Handbook, NGA's The Chairs' Handbook and 12 months free subscription to Learning Link will be provided.

  • The programme offers a blend of flexible learning delivered at a sensible pace for busy chairs
  • It comprises three 2.5-hour small group workshops led by an experienced NGA consultant, with a focus on leading the LGB, delivering effective local governance and supporting school improvement
  • Discussion, debate and networking are an important part of the workshops. Because it is run virtually, this programme enables you to network with current and future LGB chairs from all over England

By the end of the programme, you will:

  • have a clear understanding of leadership within the context of local governance
  • know how to build your team and your relationship with your senior executive leader
  • know how to work with the trust board, CEO and, central team and other LGB chairs
  • know how to plan for succession and other changes, and be able to lead and influence when required
  • be knowledgeable about your governance structures and understand to how to work with your MAT’s governance lead and local governance professional to the best effect
  • understand the local governance role in school improvement and be able to lead the LGB in effectively monitoring and challenging the performance of the school and supporting the board with its accountability, assurance obligations
  • understand the chair’s role in leading the development of a healthy school trust and school culture, including through local stakeholder engagement
  • be able to assess your effectiveness, to problem-solve, and to create and sustain your own networks

Richard Tyndall

An NGA Consultant since 2013, Richard facilitates training for chairs and those governing in single and multi academy trusts, including those chairing in MAT local governance. He also undertakes external reviews of governance in trust and school settings. Richard has been a local authority director of environment and worked in children’s play, youth work, leisure and recreation. Richard has over 20 years’ governance experience in governing and chairing in primary and secondary, special and pupil referral unit settings.  Richard has good knowledge of recruiting and working with headteachers and leading improvement programmes. He also has chairing experience in the third sector organisations. He is currently a governor at a primary school in Tower Hamlets.
