  • Current or future chairs of a maintained school or federation

This programme would suit those new to chairing or who anticipate becoming chair shortly.

This programme aims to equip you to build effective governance in your school(s) by:

  • focusing on meeting the challenges typically faced by governing body chairs
  • developing your knowledge, leadership skills and networks with peers
  • enhancing your awareness of your own strengths and areas for development
  • creating self-supporting groups to ensure learning continues beyond the programme
  • offering a system to problem-solve through action learning sets and other activities

A comprehensive Participant Handbook, NGA's The Chairs' Handbook and 12 months free subscription to Learning Link will be provided.

  • The programme offers a blend of flexible learning delivered at a sensible pace for busy chairs
  • It comprises three 2.5-hour small group workshops led by an experienced NGA consultant, with a focus on leading the governing body, delivering effective governance and leading school improvement
  • The programme uses a wide range of engaging activities designed to allow participants to explore what good chairing practice looks like and how to achieve it
  • Sharing, discussion, debate and networking are an important part of the workshops. Because it is run virtually, this programme enables you to network with governors from all over England

By the end of the programme, you will:

  • have a clear understanding of strategic leadership within the context of maintained school governance
  • know how to manage and build your team and your relationship with the headteacher
  • know how to plan for succession and other changes, and be able to lead and influence when required
  • be knowledgeable about governance structures, effective delegation, and how to work with the governance professional to best effect
  • understand the governance role in school improvement and be able to lead the board in effectively challenging the performance of the school organisation
  • be able to assess your own effectiveness, to problem-solve, and to create and sustain your own networks

Lisa has chaired governing boards for the last ten years in various school settings. An NGA Consultant since 2015, Lisa facilitates training for chairs and those governing in single and multi academy trusts including those chairing in MATs at local governance level. She has several years’ experience of working with and supporting maintained school chairs on NGA’s Leading Governance development programme.
