The National Governance Association (NGA) welcomes the government's recent announcement to fully fund a 5.5% pay increase for teachers and support staff as part of a £1.2 billion investment in the education sector.

This significant investment, along with plans to honour the recommendations of the Schoolteachers’ Pay and Conditions Consultation, highlights the new government’s commitment to valuing the dedication and hard work of educators and support staff across the country.

The increase fully complies with the recommendations of the School Teachers’ Review Body, to which NGA contributes, in order to share our member’s’ views and influence decisions such as today’s. This decision aligns with the NGA's longstanding support for fair and proportional pay for all school staff. NGA has consistently stressed the importance of ensuring that pay raises for non-teaching management do not exceed those given to teaching staff. This announcement demonstrates a balanced approach to remuneration.

NGA's manifesto for schools and trusts underlines the need for adequate funding to support the professional development and well-being of school staff, which in turn directly impacts the quality of education provided to pupils.

Emma Balchin, Co-Chief Executive, NGA, said:

"We are delighted to see the government taking such a positive step towards addressing the financial challenges within the education sector. Fully funding a 5.5% pay increase for teachers and support staff not only recognises their invaluable contributions but critically supports the retention and recruitment of talented professionals. This investment, alongside the commitment to workforce reform and workload changes, is a crucial move towards creating a more sustainable and equitable education system."

NGA remains committed to working collaboratively with the government, schools and trusts, and our members to ensure that this funding is effectively utilised to enhance the educational outcomes for all pupils. We believe that this investment is part of a bigger picture which will help create an environment where both staff and students can thrive.
