Our 2021 annual governance survey has shown that some traditionally topical multi academy trust (MAT) debates are more relevant than ever. NGA looks at the separation of layers and trusts.

Significant separation

In our original 2019 state-of-the-nation report on MAT governance, NGA asked the Department for Education (DfE) to focus more on greater separation between members and trustees. NGA committed to continue arguing vigorously for separation of power between governance layers and roles

More than half (57%) of MAT trustee respondents to the 2021 survey said their trust planned to grow in the next year. Those in the smallest trusts, with two to five schools, were most keen to grow, with two-thirds (66%) looking to take on one or more schools in the coming year.
