During today's (12 June) fantastic National Governance Conference for Schools and Trusts, we were honoured to share a message from the newly appointed Bridget Phillipson MP, the new Secretary of State for Education.

Bridget Phillipson MP, Secretary of State for Education, said:

I wanted to send this message to you all to introduce myself as your new Secretary of State for Education and to thank you for your vital work.

Under this new government, education will once again be at the heart of change and the forefront of national life. Governors, trustees and all governance professionals are an essential part of this.

I’ve made it a priority in my first week to reset the relationship with our workforces and their leadership. You are valued partners in our shared mission to break down the barriers to opportunity and deliver better life chances for all children.

I see how hard you work as volunteers, giving up your valuable time to give all children the best start in life. Drawing on your dedication and expertise, I want to work in partnership with you to drive high and rising standards in all our schools.

As the next step in a long journey we will take together, I’d like to invite you to join me for a live event next Tuesday, 16th July, at 4.00pm, where I’ll share more about my vision for the education system. But I really want to hear from you too, so there will be a chance for you to share your views and ask me questions in the live chat function.

I wish you all well for what I hope will be a successful conference, and I look forward to working with you in the weeks and months ahead.

Along with today's message, NGA's Co-Chief Executive, Emma Blachin, was invited to the Department of Education to meet with the Secretary of State and other members of the education sector to network and discuss their needs from the future government. We are keen to continue the conversation with the government to ensure your views, needs and what you told us as part of the Annual Governance Suvery 2024 are heard at the highest levels.
