Governing board self-evaluation questions
Use our questions to support annual self-evaluation of the board’s effectiveness and inform subsequent actions.
It is good practice for governing boards to regularly evaluate their own effectiveness. NGA recommends that boards undertake self-evaluation activity on an annual basis.
Our self-evaluation questions have been compiled to support an annual self-evaluation of the board’s effectiveness and inform subsequent actions, whether that relates to future training, development or recruitment needs.
Two distinct question sets are available; for multi academy trusts (MATs) and for single schools.
A RAG (red, amber, green) rating system is provided to help individual board members respond to the questions.
The questions cover:
- board culture and practice
- board structure
- core functions
- compliance
- evaluation and impact
You may wish to use all of the questions or to focus on a particular section.

360° review for chairs
Our self-evaluation questions refer to a 360° appraisal process, used to evaluate the chair’s effectiveness. NGA's is based on the DfE’s Competency Framework and provides a comprehensive snapshot of strengths and development needs.
