Headteachers and CEOs work in a challenging environment with limited resources and high levels of accountability. In this context, it is important for leaders to feel supported by a governing board that plays its part in limiting unnecessary stress, challenging excessive working hours and maintaining a healthy work-life balance.

This evaluation tool focuses on the wellbeing of school leaders, their self-care and how this is modelled throughout the school/trust. It prompts governing boards to consider and take action on:

  • governing board awareness of wellbeing issues
  • dedicated time and resource for headteacher/CEO development
  • leadership capacity across the school/trust
  • access to, and use of, professional support for the headteacher/CEO
  • the impact of discussions between the governing board and headteacher/CEO
