pupils doing PE

Physical education (PE), together with school sport and other physical activity, supports pupils’ wider development including their mental health and social wellbeing. Effective delivery can offer opportunities rich in personal development as well as creating opportunities for increased overall attainment.

This guide covers:

  • PE national curriculum expectations
  • Understanding your provision: prompts for discussions with school leaders
  • How boards can influence high-quality provision: policy and strategy
  • How to monitor progress, impact and outcomes

This guide has been produced in collaboration with Youth Sport Trust, a children’s charity, working to ensure every child enjoys the life-changing benefits that come from play and sport. Working together with partners, YST empower young people to achieve their own personal best and equip educators to change lives.

Girls Active case study

A case study from Youth Sport Trust shows how one school identified challenges in encouraging girls – particularly those of Muslim faith – to be physically active throughout their secondary school life. The school successfully introduced a broader programme of activity that was the result of proactive communication and consultation with pupils and parents.
