Prevent is a core component of the government’s counter-terrorism strategy (known as CONTEST).

The Prevent duty in schools and academy trusts forms part of wider safeguarding and welfare responsibilities, as set out in ‘Working together to safeguard children’ and ‘Keeping children safe in education’.

Our Prevent duty monitoring toolkit has been developed in collaboration with the Department for Education (DfE). It is designed to help governing boards understand school/trust responsibilities under the Prevent duty and ensure statutory requirements are met.

The toolkit includes a monitoring checklist and questions to ask that cover:

  • Prevent duty policy requirements
  • Leadership responsibility for overseeing Prevent delivery
  • Evaluating pupils' risk of radicalisation
  • Training and development to support Prevent delivery
  • Building pupils' resilience through the curriculum and beyond
