Matters Arising

The NGA magazine

The NGA magazine was relaunched in April 2008 with a new format and a new title. Matters Arising is a 32 page full colour magazine with news, features, comment and reviews. Most of the editorial copy is written by governors, and the magazine offers a wealth of material about the business of governance.

With six issues a year the NGA magazine should be a central part of every governing body's professional support package.

Individual NGA members are sent a magazine as part of their membership package; standard governing body members receive a maximum of five magazines delivered to named governors and to the school. Gold Governing Body members can all receive an individual copy. Membership details can be found >here<

Value for Money?

Alternative magazines do exist.

Governors Agenda published by ContinYou is published five times a year and costs £35 for an individual annual subscription and £75 for five copies.

School Governor Update published by Teaching Expertise is published six times a year; the magazine is typically 12 pages in length and costs £69 for a primary subscription, and £89 for a secondary subscription - for a single copy. To receive 20 copies of each issue a primary school would have to pay an annual sub of nearly £1400!

Neither of these two magazines offers any additional membership benefits.

Why has the NGA changed its magazine?

As part of a reformed NGA membership package the new-look NGA magazine will be sent direct to members’ homes. This will allow us to cut our distribution costs considerably, and will, incidentally, also save on paper and wastage.

We are making these changes for a number of reasons: the previous method of production and distribution was simply unsustainable. It cost too much, both in financial terms and in its environmental impact. We were concerned about whether our members actually received their magazines. In a number of cases we were informed of the whole bulk package being lost, and we know of too many cases where individual governors never saw ‘their’ copy.

Standard membership will cost £55 and entitles a GB to three copies for named governors plus additional copies for the school. More details here

Gold membership will cost much more – £250 – but will include a copy of the NGA magazine sent to every governor, plus free distance learning training, worth £40 per person, for each new governor joining your governing body. More details here
